A man who had sex with a 13-year-old girl he met on Bebo after he claimed to be 19-years-old will be sentenced next month.

The 24-year-old Dublin man befriended the teenager through the social networking website and sex with her with twice at his family’s home.

The Dublin man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two charges of defilement of a child at his home on April 29, 2011.

The details of the case were heard in October when Judge Mary Ellen Ring adjourned sentencing in order to determine what kind of treatment would be available for the man upon his release from prison.

Doctor Patrick Randall previously gave evidence that he was satisfied that the man does not have paedophilic tendencies but rather “gravitates towards younger people because he is more comfortable with them”.

Roisin Lacey BL, prosecuting, told the court that more time was needed in order to facilitate a full psychological consultation with the accused and to prepare a proper report.

Ms Lacey also told the court that the victim, who is now aged 15, had accepted a sum of €5,000 offered in compensation by the accused.

Judge Ring adjourned sentencing for a further four weeks and remanded the man in custody.
