Man acquitted on charges of raping wife's young niece

A Longford resident has been acquitted by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury of having sex with his wife’s 12-year-old niece.

The 39-year-old accused had pleaded not guilty to 17 sample counts of sexual assault between December 2004 and April 2006 at the Kildare home he shared with the now 17-year-old girl.

The jury of eight men and four women took almost three and half hours to find the man not guilty on all charges on day-four of the trial.

Judge Tony Hunt thanked the jury members for their “obvious care and attention” during the trial and told the man he was free to go.
