Man accused of raping and impregnating daughter
A rape trial has today heard that a 19-year-old woman will allege she became pregnant by her father five years ago.
The accused, from Sligo, denies seven charges of rape and eight charges of sexual assault, which his daughter alleges happened at the family home between 2005 and 2007.
It is alleged the accused began abusing his daughter a week after her 13th birthday and that the abuse continued for two years.
Opening the case, prosecution counsel Isobel Kennedy said the evidence will be that the abuse happened mostly in her bedroom at night but also sometimes in her father's room where she would go because she was afraid of ghosts.
It is alleged that the man first raped her in the sitting room in March 2006 and then told her that she was not a virgin anymore.
The jury heard she became pregnant the following February and that it is her opinion that the accused is the father of her child and that she will say that she has not been with anyone else.
