Man accused of murdering veteran criminal appears in court via video link

The scene of the shooting in Dublin last December.

A Dublin man charged with the murder of veteran criminal Eamon Kelly appeared briefly via video link at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin today.

Last December Sean Connolly (aged 34), of Bernard Curtis House, Bluebell, Dublin 12, was charged at a special sitting of the court with murdering Mr Kelly at Furry Park Road, Killester on Dublin’s north-side, on December 4, 2012.

Mr Connolly was also charged with IRA membership on the same date and with possession of a firearm on the same occasion.

Today, Connolly appeared via video link with Portlaoise Prison and the court was told that the book of evidence in the case had been served on his solicitor.

Mr Michael Bowman BL for the State, said that the defence would probably require a period of time to consider the contents of the book of evidence.

Connolly's counsel Ms Siobhan Ni Chulachain BL applied for a remand until April 17 to allow the defence to consider the book of evidence.

Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, remanded Connolly in custody until April 17 next and ordered that he be produced in court then for arraignment.
