A major search is underway for a man who is believed to have entered the River Shannon in Limerick City.

Gardaí said the man, named locally as Nicky Lyons, 30, was last seen by members of his family fishing near the Athlunkard Boat Club yesterday.

A major air, land and water search has been mounted involving Mr Lyons' family, the Shannon-based Coast Guard rescue helicopter and local search and rescue groups.

A bike and fishing rod believed to have been belonging to Mr Lyons was found in the river this afternoon.

Henry Street Gardaí are investigating Mr Lyons' disappearance.
