Mahon evidence harming Government credibility, says O'Malley

Progressive Democrats senator Fiona O'Malley has said the credibility of the Government is being undermined by the contradictions surrounding the Taoiseach's evidence at the Mahon Tribunal.

In a newspaper interview this morning, the PD leadership candidate says Bertie Ahern should clarify the latest revelations as soon as possible rather than waiting for his next appearance at the tribunal.

Significant contradictions have emerged about Mr Ahern's personal finances, particularly a number of lodgements in 1994 to his bank account and those of his daughters.

Mr Ahern has told the tribunal that they were the proceeds of his pay cheques.

However, his constituency office secretary was forced to admit under oath last week that they were actually the proceeds of Sterling exchanges.
