Additional staff are being appointed to the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) following a surge in demand due to the recession.

The service says more than 12,000 people have sought advice on money problems in the first half of this year, which surpasses the total number of calls throughout 2008.

As a result, 19 new advisers are set to be hired, bringing the total MABS workforce to 271.

MABS provides financial advice to people struggling with debts and budgeting problems.
