Loyalists meet with Holy Cross school board
Protesting loyalist residents in north Belfast have held an hour-long meeting with the board of governors of Holy Cross School for the first time in over a week.
The talks, which included the chairman of the school’s board of governors, Fr Aidan Troy, were described as ‘exploratory’.
He said there was no proposal to end the protest, nor was there likely to be one for some time.
Stuart McCartney, a spokesman for the residents, said they were annoyed and angered at the number of parents who are accompanying their children to school each day.
He also said they had considered erecting a permanent barrier between the two communities that could be closed at times of tension.
It is understood that the residents have chosen two people to negotiate with them.
One is believed to be Tommy Cheevers of the Apprentice Boys and the other Lee Reynolds of the Ulster Scots Heritage Council.
The loyalist residents are also due to meet the Northern Secretary John Reid at Hillsborough Castle this evening.
