An additional 1,100 people signed on the Live Register in March, figures from the Central Statistics Office revealed today.

On a seasonally adjusted basis the numbers signing on increased to 442,000 in the month compared to 440,900 in February.

Despite this small increase the seasonally adjusted Live Register total remains 6,800 below the peak level recorded in September 2010.

In unadjusted terms there were 441,193 people signing on in March, down 3,106 on February.

Employers' group IBEC said that the monthly increase was disappointing.

“The Government must not waste any time in putting in place a credible jobs and training strategy, with emphasis on lower level skilled workers who have been the most severely affected by the recession," said IBEC senior economist Reetta Suonperä.

"It is crucial that we avoid a prolonged period of structural unemployment."

The Small Firms Association (SFA) however noted that the jobs market would appear to be stabilising.

"The outlook for job creation is weak, and will remain slow until greater growth occurs in the economy," said SFA Director Avine McNally.

"Business and cost challenges remain for many firms and any job creation is fragile”

Small business group ISME said the new Government must refocus on jobs and rebalance their overall efforts away from the banks and NAMA in favour of job retention and creation.

"However, the new government’s plan for jobs will be a waste of time, effort and money if business costs remain at the current high levels," ISME Chief Executive Mark Fielding said.

"It is imperative that they introduce without delay the ‘jobs fund’ that was promised to be delivered within the first 100 days of their taking up office and address the demand and supply side inhibitors that are preventing employment creation."
