All eyes turn to Frankfurt now, where the ECB Governing Council is meeting to discuss a deal on the Anglo promissory notes. An announcement is expected later today.
Minister Richard Bruton said he understood the uncertainty felt by the 850 workers at IBRC, but added that many of them would be redeployed to NAMA.
He said last night's events were about protecting the taxpayer.
"Last night, we brought to an end the whole saga of Anglo Irish," he said. "Recall five years ago we had a debate about writing a blank and open cheque to save Anglo Irish…Now we've brought (it) to an end. I think that is an important milestone."
