Limerick residents jump from upstairs window to escape house fire
Gardaí in Limerick are investigating a suspicious fire at a house this morning when two occupants jumped to safety from an upstairs window.
According to a source in the emergency services, the fire started at the front door of the house on Lawnway, Carew Park, at approximately 6am.
A man and a woman - both aged in their 40s - who were inside the house at the time, escaped through an upstairs window.
They suffered smoke inhalation to their lungs and were taken to University Hospital Limerick, where their condition was not believed to be life threatening.
Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at approximately 6.08am, and sent three tenders.
Fire fighters battled the blaze for around 40 minutes before leaving the scene to allow Gardaí carry out a forensic examination of the house.
"Upon arrival, fire fighters treated the two sole occupants, (suffering) smoke inhalation, had escaped through an upstairs window," said a source.
"It's believed the fire started at the front door of the premises. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 15 minutes and handed the casualties over to HSE paramedics.
"They were treated on scene and transported to UHL. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Gardaí are currently investigating the cause of the fire."
A Garda spokesman confirmed that the matter was "under investigation".
