A postman has managed to achieve the impossible by delivering a letter to a house in Cavan having just the recipient's first names; Ann and Jimmy.

An Post said they were baffled by the delivery.

A spokesperson said that during normal operations 2.5 million items are sent per day, and this increases two-fold over the Christmas period.

The postal operator said, while letters have been delivered with just maps on the envelopes in the past, they would strongly encourage people to use full addresses.
