Less than 10% of septic tanks registered with Govt

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.

Only 30,000 of the country's 500,000 septic tank and other waste-water treatment system owners have registered their tanks.

There is less than a month to go until the €5 fee is upped to €50 for their mandatory registration.

The charge is part of the scheme introduced by the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan ahead of inspections, which could see many householders forced to carry out upgrades to their systems.

From September 28, those who haven't already registered will have to pay a €50 fee instead of the current €5, which was introduced for the first three months of registration by the Government after a public outcry.
