Lenihan denies Budget changes have damaged Govt

22/10/2008 - 10:32:51
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has denied that yesterday's climbdowns on controversial Budget measures have damaged the Government.

Speaking this morning, Mr Lenihan insisted that the Budget was still on course, despite major changes on over-70s medical cards and the 1% special income tax.

The climbdowns followed intense criticism from the public, the Opposition, lobby groups, trade unions and Government back-benchers.

Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore has described the Budget as a political humiliation for the Government.

However, Mr Lenihan is insisting that he and his colleagues are showing leadership in dealing with the economic downturn and the massive deterioration in the public finances this year.
