Legal challenge looms over Aer Lingus move
Campaigners fighting the Aer Lingus decision to axe its Shannon to Heathrow service vowed today to explore a possible legal challenge as the Government insisted it was working towards a solution.
Hundreds of business, tourism and political figures agreed to step up their protest against the move of the route to Belfast over fears it will have a devastating impact on the midwest.
Despite fierce criticism of the Government’s response to the situation, Defence Minister Willie O’Dea said they were working behind the scenes to resolve the matter.
He attacked Aer Lingus for its decision to move its Heathrow service to the North.
“I have had detailed conversations with An Taoiseach and Minister Noel Dempsey with regard to the Aer Lingus decision to axe the profitable Shannon to Heathrow route,” he said.
“We are working behind the scenes to come up with a solution to the current situation.”
Mr O’Dea added: “The disgraceful decision of Aer Lingus flies in the face of Government policy, which promotes regional development and the connectivity in aviation terms of all regions.
“Aer Lingus is a company that has generated huge revenue over the years from Shannon Airport and yet they repay the people of the Mid-West by deciding to axe a commercially viable route.”
