Irish naval vessel the L.E. James Joyce will be welcomed home today following its mission in the Mediterranean sea.

The crew helped rescue thousands of people fleeing war torn countries as they attempted to gain access to mainland Europe.

Since the Government began sending Irish crews to the area more than 10,000 lives have been saved.

The L.E. James Joyce will arrive into Haulbowline later.
