Update 6.57pm: Three males have now been confirmed deceased following a two-vehicle collision on the N72 earlier today.

All three deceased have been removed to University Hospital Waterford for post mortem examinations.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or who may have travelled on this stretch of road to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on 058-48600.

The Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

The road will remain closed overnight and diversions are in place.

Earlier:

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

The two car collision happened on Military Road in the town at around 10am this morning.

One car was carrying six people and the other car, which went up in flames, is thought to have been carrying two.

Gardai have confirmed that there were three fatalities as well as a number of injuries from the incident.

A number of children were involved in the crash.

Six people have been taken to hospital by for treatment. They have been taken to Cork University Hospital and Waterford Hospital.

The road has been closed by officials and there are a number of emergency services at the scene.

Diversions are in place and people are being urged to avoid the area.
