The family of a young student who was tied up and repeatedly raped throughout the night have arrived in Dublin to care for her, it has been reported.
The 18-year-old Spanish student met an Irish man in the city centre on Saturday before she was brought to the Pigeon House Road beside Sandymount Strand in Ringsend, where the prolonged attack took place.
The scene has been examined by forensic experts. Investigating gardaí say they have spoken to a number of people, and they are also gathering CCTV footage.
A 24-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has since been released without charge. Gardaí say a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions "as a matter of urgency".
It is understood that the victim walked with the man from Eden Quay to Store Street, took the Luas to The Point stop, before walking to Tom Clarke (East Link) Bridge to the coast, near Pigeon House Road.
Gardaí have appealed to any witnesses to contact them.
Gardaí in Irishtown are investigating the alleged serious sexual assault of a young Spanish woman in Dublin.
The 18-year-old has reported the attack took place at the weekend on Pigeon House Road in Ringsend.
She said she met an Irish man in the city centre on Saturday but was persuaded to take a southbound DART.
It is alleged she was subjected to an horrific attack over a number of hours, and when she escaped she went to Gardaí who immediately launched an investigation.
A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the alleged assault.
He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
Local councillor Chris Andrews described the incident as "horrifying".
He said: "I have spoken with a number of local residents and it is horrifying what happened to that poor young girl. My thoughts are with her and her family and I hope she can find the strength to get through her ordeal.
"I have asked that the local Gardaí in Irishtown make it a regular area for them to visit and increase visibility.
"Unfortunately because of the housing crisis there is a number of people who have to live in tents in this general area.
"Obviously the vast majority get on with their daily struggle, but it is important that the residents are assured that they are safe in this area which is a regular recreational spot for young and old."
