The anti-austerity protest outside the Dáil descended into chaos, with one Garda getting knocked out during the scuffles.

The sit-down protest over water charges and the situation in Greece caused rush-hour traffic delays in the Kildare Street area.

"I understand that they have a right to believe in what they do, as long as its done democratically," said Senator Denis Landy.

"But when we reduce ourselves to this, where members of the parliament can't go in and out of work, and go about the business that they have to do, it's not acceptable."
