Labour seeks ‘bio-security unit’ after bird flu outbreak
14/10/2005 - 09:14:05The Labour Party has called on the Government to set up a "bio-security unit" to deal with issues like the bird flu outbreak.
The call follows confirmation that the strain of the illness which has devastated poultry stocks in Asia over the past two years has now arrived in Europe.
The H5N1 strain has been detected in Turkey and possibly also in Romania.
Labour TD Mary Upton said she believed the matter had highlighted the need for an inter-departmental "bio-security unit" to constantly monitor such outbreaks.
