Labour: School class sizes need to be reduced

26/03/2005 - 09:00:19
The Labour party has claimed that education standards are suffering because class sizes are too big.

It has tabled a Dáil motion calling on the Government to fulfil promises it has already made to reduce the child-teacher ratio in both primary and secondary schools.

Labour hopes the issue will be discussed in the Dáil as soon as deputies return after the Easter holidays.

The party's education spokesperson, Jan O'Sullivan, says important steps must be taken to ensure children do not lose out.

“We have over 100,000 children in primary school and over 35,000 second-level students that are in class sizes of over 30”, she said.

This situation, Deputy O’Sullivan says, makes things very difficult for children with learning difficulties or those who may need individual attention.

“We really need to make sure that the Government fulfils its promises”, she said.
