North Korea to carry out nuclear test
28/08/2003 - 18:16:16North Korea announced today that it intends to formally declare its possession of nuclear weapons and to carry out a nuclear test, a US official said.
North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Yong Il also told the six nation summit in Beijing that his country has the means to deliver nuclear weapons, an apparent reference to the North’s highly developed missile programme.
The comments cast a pall over today’s session, which included representatives of the US, South Korea, China, Japan and Russia, in addition to North Korea.
Earlier, summit delegates attempting to defuse the US-North Korea nuclear dispute indicated they had agreed on further talks to keep the fragile diplomatic process moving.
A Russian official said there was a “common understanding” to talk again within two months, and South Korea said everyone had concurred that a second summit would be beneficial to all involved.
