Newborn baby hurled out car window

A newly born boy was hurled out a car window onto the grass beside a busy Florida street and the car sped off, police said.

Investigators were seeking the parents of the boy, whose umbilical cord was still attached when he was found by a passing woman. Doctors believe the infant was less than an hour old at the time.

The woman took the baby to the North Lauderdale sheriff’s office yesterday afternoon and it was immediately rushed to hospital where it is in serious condition, said spokesman Jim Leljedal.

It was unclear what injuries the eight-pound, two-ounce child suffered.

The woman who rescued the baby – who was inside a small plastic bag – said she saw a man and woman arguing inside the vehicle.

The baby was thrown from the passenger side, three or four feet away in the grass.

No information was released on the baby’s identity.

County Sheriff Ken Jenne said he hopes that the people who threw the baby out of the moving car are feeling remorse and will come forward.

“I would hope nature would take its course and they would feel the guilt of having abandoned this child, putting it at risk, and will come forward,” he said.

The woman who found the boy originally thought the couple had thrown a puppy out the window, was “very distraught, very upset,” Jenne added.
