Kerry council: Fly infestation being tackled

Kerry County Council has said a fly infestation problem in north Kerry in recent days was most likely caused by work being carried out at its landfill site at Muingnaminnane.

Council workers using tracking machines to cover a cell at the landfill site, accidently disturbed vast numbers of flies, who have multiplied in the rising temperatures of recent days.

Householders in the greater Ballymacelligott and Tralee areas appear to be worst affected by the infestation.

Council spokesman Padraig Corkery told Radio Kerry the council had increased spraying insecticide in the affected areas, as well as removing more of the waste.

He said the council hoped the fly problem would be removed by tomorrow evening.
