Kenny's absence from debate 'bodes very badly' for country, says Lenihan

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said today that Enda Kenny's reluctance to show up for tonight's TV3 debate bodes "very badly" for the future of the country.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore will go head to head in tonight's debate, which will be moderated by journalist Vincent Browne.

The Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny will be Carrick-on-Shannon meeting and greeting the party faithful, saying that he will not be watching the debate.

Minister Lenihan says his refusal to show up shows a lack of leadership at time when the country most needs it.

"Here we have the next person who, according to the bookies, is the odds-on favourite for Taoiseach, and he’s reluctant to communicate with the people at a time of economic crisis," said Minister Lenihan.

"It doesn’t bode well for his capacity to give leadership in an economic crisis if he’s not willing to communicate when the people are focused on this crisis and how we resolve it. It bodes very badly for it."
