Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today that the only alternative to the property tax in today's Budget is to increase income tax.
Responding to a question from Independent TD Shane Ross, the Taoiseach said that changing income tax is not the direction the Government wants to go in.
"I think we're one of the last countries in Europe not to have a property tax," he said.
"We want this to be as fair, and as equitable, and seen to be progressive.
"Because the alternative, Deputy Ross, is to increase income tax, and to put taxes on work, and that's not the direction we want to go in.
"Twenty thousand new jobs were created in the last 12 months in the private sector."
