Kenny: Eurozone can and will be protected

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has insisted that the euro single currency and eurozone can - and will - be protected.

Speaking today ahead of next week's EU leaders summit, Mr Kenny said it was now time to send a very clear signal to the markets that the single currency will be maintained.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to make a landmark speech this evening in which he is expected to detail how he believes the eurozone debt crisis should be resolved.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will deliver a similar address tomorrow, detailing her vision for Europe's future.

The Taoiseach said EU political leaders will show clarity and decisiveness in Brussels.

"This is a time for leadership, a time for decisiveness, and a time for sending a very clear signal to the markets that that the eurozone, and the euro, can and will be protected," Mr Kenny said.

"The essence of that is clarity, decisiveness and political leadership.

"I will espouse our views on that very clearly next week."
