Kenny defends methods of Property Tax collection
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has defended the actions of the Revenue Commissioners in the way they are collecting the Local Property Tax for next year.
Anyone who pays the tax in a one-off method - by cheque or debit or credit card - will have to inform revenue of this in the next week, and make the payment by the end of November.
Revenue has written to nearly a million homeowners who chose this method for the 2013 tax.
Speaking on his way into Cabinet this morning, the Taoiseach said there are a range of options for people:
"Well I think the explanation given yesterday by the Revenue Commissioners was very clear," he said.
"It is up to the individual person themselves as to which option they choose, and there are a range of options for payment.
"That doesn't necessarily involve payment being made before Christmas."
A Labour TD has meanwhile called for the extension of the property tax deadline.
TD for Dublin North-West John Lyons said there is too much confusion surrounding the payment timeframe.
"I'm not happy with the lack of clarity around this, and I think clarity needs to be brought around this - particualrly given that this is a tax that was brought in just over a year ago," he said.
"In times like we're in right now, it's tough for people to hand over money - let's make it as easy as possible".
"This is money that goes into the kitty next year - let's look at extending the deadline," he added.
