Kenny apologises to whistleblower McCabe
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has apologised to Sergeant Maurice McCabe for the state's failure to investigate his allegations more quickly.
Kenny said the Garda whistleblower has been completely vindicated by the findings of the Guerin Report.
The cabinet has ordered a panel of experts to look into the operations of the Department of Justice and to ask the Garda Inspectorate to look into the management of serious crime within the Gardaí.
The Taoiseach added McCabe's allegations of Garda malpractice should have been investigated quicker.
“I've no problem in apologising to Sergeant McCabe for the issues that he raised and for the fact that his raising of these matters wasn’t dealt more speedily in the first instance,” said Mr Kenny.
It was also announced during Dáil proceedings that the Secretary General of the Department of Justice Brian Purcell has agreed to answer questions at a Dáil committee.
Purcell's position has been the subject of intense speculation since the Guerin report found the Department had failed to properly investigate allegations of Garda misconduct.
The Oireachtas Justice Committee has confirmed that Mr Purcell has agreed to appear before it, most probably some time next week.
