Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly has warned that people who claim the €100 Water Conservation Grant but do not pay their Irish Water bills will face stiff penalties.
Minister Alan Kelly said that people who put in their own wells or are members of group water schemes deserve the grant, as well as those who pay their Irish Water utility bill.
He said that people who do not pay their water bills could receive the grant, but they will be penalised in the long run.
"People who register, get their €100, and don't pay their water bills will end up paying more, because the legislation has been passed by my colleague Frances Fitzgerald," he said.
"They will pay penalties, and penalties, and penalties.
"So while they might get their €100 up front, and while they might benefit from that, they will end up, ultimately, less well off."
