Kelly announces bid for role in Labour leadership
Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly has told a local radio station that he intends to run for a leadership position on the Labour Party.
The Tipperary North TD told Tipp FM that he intends to put his name forward for either the position of leader or deputy leader.
He refused to confirm which position he would be seeking however, ahead of a Parliamentary Party meeting today.
Alan Kelly feels he has " a lot to offer & the party needs to go in a different direction" and he "wants to be part of that" #Labour— TippFm (@TippFmNews) May 27, 2014
“I’ll certainly be putting my name forward to contest a position for leadership of the party in one of the two of them,” he said.
“To be fair, everything happened so quickly yesterday, but we need a bit of time, I’m not alone in that I’d say, [I] need a bit of time to talk to people, there’s only a certain amount of hours in the day.
“I also want to meet with my parliamentary colleagues who are coming to Dublin today and to talk to them about this, from there on I suppose, we’ll make a decision very quickly.”
