A report into an alleged "smear campaign" against Garda whistleblowers has been submitted to the Department of Justice.

Former High Court Judge Iarfhlaith O'Neill investigated two protected disclosures made to Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald.

It is alleged that Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan was part of alleged tactics to discredit whistleblowers.

The Tánaiste said that given the sensitive nature of the report, it has now been passed on to the Attorney General for her advice on how to proceed.
