Jury to consider verdict in Offaly rape trial

The trial of an Offaly man accused of sexually assaulting and orally raping four young girls has reached its closing stages at the Central Criminal Court.
The defendant's two daughters and two step-daughters have all given evidence that they were abused during their childhood, by the now-64-year-old.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to 100 charges of sexual assault and oral rape of four girls between May 1989 and December 2006.
Mr Justice Barry White told the jury, following legal argument, that they will be directed to find the man “not guilty by direction of the trial judge” on a number of charges, but did not specify which charges or how many.
The jury of six men and six women are expected to retire to consider a verdict tomorrow.
