John McAreavey's uncle takes sabbatical from role as bishop

John McAreavey's uncle is taking an eight-month sabbatical from his role as the Catholic Bishop of Dromore.

Bishop John McAreavey said that the murder of his nephew's wife Michaela in Mauritius last year has been a factor in his decision.

In a statement this evening, he said the McAreavey family has experienced great sadness and tragedy in recent times and that having consulted with colleagues, he has made the decision to undertake the sabbatical.

The bishop, who was ordained in 1999, said that he plans to spend time in prayer and study in the Holy Land as part of his leave.
