Joan Burton elected on first count

Joan Burton has been elected on the first count in Dublin West, with 9,627 votes. The quota was 8,495.

82.3% of voters tuned out to vote in the constituency.

FG's Leo Varadkar won 8,359 of the vote, with Brian Lenihan on 6,421.

"I am thrilled and honoured to have been re-elected by the people of Dublin West," said Deputy Burton on her Twitter page.

"Thank you for all the support."

Ms Burton also said she expected a large number of seats to go down to the wire late tomorrow.

“I think there will be a large number of nail-biting final seat counts. I think we will all have our fingers chewed down by this time tomorrow,” she said.

“I think it’s too close to call in a lot of constituencies.”
