Jerry McCabe family member wants army to support gardaí in border areas
A brother-in-law of Jerry McCabe, the Garda who was shot dead in Limerick in 1996, says the army should be used to support the gardaí along border areas.
Pat Kearney, himself a former Garda, said that the force is the 'Cinderella' of the state agencies, and is always let down in areas like transport and technology.
Now in light of a series of incidents including the killing of Garda Tony Golden at the weekend, Pat Kearney says action needs to be taken:
"We have 10,000 members of the army," he said.
"Why aren't they brought out to assist the gardaí along the border counties?
"Road blocks, checkpoints - the army should be there to back up the Gardaí.
"The army is underutilised in this country. We have fantastic peacekeepers in foreign countries, but why don't we keep the peace in this country?"
