Taoiseach Enda Kenny has ruled out any intervention in the case of five water charges protestors who have been jailed for contempt of court.
Mr Kenny said that the five protestors wanted to be found in contempt of court as part of their campaign.
The protestors were last week found in contempt of court for refusing to stay 20 metres away from the installation of water meters.
In the Dáil this afternoon, the Taoiseach told Socialist TD Ruth Coppinger that the protestors knew the consequences of breaching a court order.
"These people knew very well what they were doing," he said.
"They wanted to be in contempt of court, as far as I can assess, and clearly, the courts are completely and utterly independent of this House here."
He added: "If you want political leadership, well then don't be attempt to be leading a mob."
