Jailed Quinn emotional, angry and frightened, says priest

The local parish priest in Sean Quinn's hometown in Co Cavan went to visit the bankrupt businessman in prison last night.

The former Quinn Group boss began his nine-week jail sentence for contempt of court yesterday.

The High Court judge Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne said she could not ignore the extent and degree of contempt by Mr Quinn and that his behaviour in sanctioning an asset-stripping scheme fell into the category of serious misconduct.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Fr Gerry Cumiskey said that Mr Quinn is defiant and angry, but wants to assure family that he is OK.

"Fortunately I was able to spend more than an hour with him," said Fr Cumiskey.

"While I have certainly reassured his family and said he was OK yesterday evening, but they still know that it was a huge trauma for him being taken across the city in a Garda van, and being incarcerated in Mountjoy.

"So he was emotional, he was angry, I'd say he was a little bit frightened."

Mr Quinn will be due for release on the 4 January.
