Jack and Emily remain top of passport names list

By Claire Healy

The Department of Foreign Affairs has released the most popular names on first passports, with Jack and Emily topping the list.

The two names have led the way for some time and now it seems they are taking their popularity abroad.

The DFA report lists Emily, Emma, Aoife, Sophie and Grace as top of the pile when it comes to girls under three, while Jack is a runaway winner for the boys with 600 passports issued last year.

Irish names fail to make a major impact in the top 20 for either sex, Cillian, Cian, Oisín and Darragh make the cut for the boys with just Aoife and Caoimhe for the girls.

Traditional favourites Seán and Patrick are just outside the top 20, at 23 and 24 respectively.

Mary has seen a decline in popularity with just 55 registered for passports.

One Direction may have played a part in baby naming over the past couple of years, the only exception being Zayn. The four other members; Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis all appear on the list.
