01/11/2007 - 09:41:58
A young Irishman was killed and seven other people injured after a head-on car crash in Australia.

Seven tourists were in a car in the Bedford suburb of Perth late yesterday evening when the driver reportedly lost control.

Four Irish people were injured, including a 20-year-old woman who was fighting for her life after suffering severe head injuries.

The others, including a woman from Liverpool, were described as stable.

The man who died was aged 20 and had been a front seat passenger in the car.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the car had been carrying seven people when the driver lost control.

It is understood the Toyota Corolla crashed through a central barrier and crossed to the wrong side of the road before colliding with a car going in the opposite direction.

A 64-year-old woman who was driving the second car was also injured.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said families of the dead and injured had been contacted.

“The Embassy in Canberra and the Honorary Consulate in Perth are aware of the situation and they are assisting,” he said.
