Irish working week 'one of the shortest in Europe'

Full-time employees in Ireland worked 38.4 hours per week on average in 2011, one of the lowest in Europe, an EU report has revealed today.

That is less than the 40.4 hour average week worked by workers in the so-called 'EU27', according to Eurostat's Labour Force Survey.

The typical working woman in Ireland works for 39.3 hours per week, while men here spend 41.1 hours on the job.

The longest weekly working hours for full-time employees were observed in the United Kingdom (42.2 hours), compared to Austria (41.8), Cyprus and Portugal (both 41.1).

The shortest were found in Denmark (37.7), Ireland (38.4), Italy (38.8) and The Netherlands (39).

The Eurostat study also shows that nearly 70% of all workers across the EU are employed in the services sector, compared with 62% in 2000.
