The country's most senior diplomat has said the Irish WikiLeaks revelations only show that ambassadors are doing their job.

The Irish Independent is this week revealing details of more than 1,900 "cables" obtained by the website.

All Irish ambassadors have been recalled here for a two-day pep talk by the Government.

And in a tongue-in-cheek comment at the event this morning, Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade David Cooney said the Wikileaks documents showed diplomats worked hard for their living.

"For so long (some people) have been convinced by some sections of the media that diplomats are ladies and gentlemen of leisure, who pass their days quaffing champagne and nibbling Ferrero Rocher.

"Well, Wikileaks has blown our cover. It's revealed that diplomats work hard for their living, spending long hours lobbying, writing up reports and dealing with difficult issues."
