Irish Water promise not to use PPS numbers in pursuit of unpaid bills

Irish Water has said it will not use someone's PPS number to chase a customer for any unpaid bills.

The utility added it is only allowed to use a PPS number to make sure people are only claiming the proper allowances.

The statement comes after reports that the utility would use PPS numbers to pursue tenants who move out of a property without clearing their water bills.

Irish Water noted it will only use other personal information like phone numbers or an email address.

Separately the Data Protection Commission has said it has never engaged with Irish Water over whether PPS numbers could be used to chase arrears.
