Irish Water said today that water meter installations are not causing leaks.

It a statement, the utility company says that it was always anticipated that pre-existing leaks and other defects would be uncovered when putting in the meters.

It has denied that the leaks are caused by contractors.

Irish Water added that to ensure there was no delay to the project, the Environment Department provided funding to cover the cost of repairing such leaks last year.
