Irish trawler sends distress signal, search underway

A major search operation has been mounted off the south coast after receiving a distress signal from an Irish fishing vessel.

A major search operation has been mounted off the south coast after receiving a distress signal from an Irish fishing vessel.

The trawler, which has at least six crewmen on board, sent the signal to the Coastguard at around 11am.

Its last known location was about 120 miles south of Mizen Head.

A British coastguard helicopter and two Spanish trawlers are on their way to the scene to try to locate the vessel and its crew.
