Irish tourist killed in Florida hit-and-run

An Irish tourist has been killed in a hit-and-run car accident in south Florida.

Broward Sheriff’s officials said the victim, a 41-year-old man, was crossing the street before dawn yesterday and was hit by a BMW that was then driven away.

It happened just before 5am as the victim and two other friends - who are also believed to be Irish - were walking on the footpath in North Lauderdale on the way back from a bar when the victim walked across the road and was struck.

A friend of driver Richard Jennings saw the damaged BMW and called authorities. After several hours of investigating, authorities found Jennings at his home, and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

Authorities have not identified the victim and are still notifying next of kin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin said it is aware of the incident.
