Irish people support European Constitution

18/07/2005 - 17:44:13
More than half of Irish people support the idea of a European Constitution, according to a public opinion poll published today by the European Commission.

The Eurobarometer poll, which interviewed thousands of European citizens, also shows that six out of 10 people in the EU are in favour of a constitution for Europe.

Some 86% of Irish people surveyed think the introduction of the euro is a good thing, compared to just over 50% in other European countries. The result will come as a shock to those who believe that the single currency has led to prices rocketing here.

Nearly 75% are happy with the way democracy works in Ireland, while more than half of Irish people support a common defence and security policy for EU member states.
