The Naval Service said it completed 912 boardings in 2014 for alleged infringements of fishing regulations.

Ten of these resulted in vessels being detained and 31 fishing boats had infringements recorded during inspections.

The Irish Navy also said the detention of the yacht Makayabella in September, with the seizure of €80m worth of cocaine, was a significant success.

So far this year, the specialist Naval Service Dive Team has been called out to 43 operations.

Meanwhile, the Air Corps completed 107 Air ambulance missions, including 64 national and 47 international transfers of patients.

And it conducted 12 search and rescue missions in 2014.
