Irish 'My door's open' video captures sentiment on day of solidarity with refugees

A national day of action is being held at famine memorials across Ireland to show solidarity with refugees.

An event organised by campaign group Uplift, the Irish Refugee Council and Migrant Rights Centre Ireland culminates in a minute's silence at the Famine memorial at the Custom House Quays in Dublin at 1pm.

Uplift has encouraged others to gather in similar spots around the country, with more information on the group's facebook page.

More than 35,000 people here have signed the group's petition calling on the Government to take decisive action on the issue.

A total of 12,100 people from all over the country have also signed "bed pledges" to show solidarity with the refugees, with the number growing daily.

Uplift director Siobhan O'Donoghue is urging people to come out today. "It's really important people find a way of expressing how they feel, " she said.

"Enda Kenny needs to get in step with Irish people, not behind them."

He sang "One boy washed up on an empty beach" during Pride (In The Name Of Love).
