Irish man charged with assault on Australian politician

A 28-year-old Irish man has been charged for allegedly assaulting a politician in Australia.

Country Liberals Justice Spokesperson, John Elferink, was in Darwin yesterday speaking to the media about tougher laws on alcohol-fuelled violence when a man approached him from behind and kicked him in the leg.

Mr Elferink, a former policeman, then tackled the man to the ground and tried to make a citizens arrest.

It is alleged two other men from a nearby pub approached the politician and wrestled with him.

Police have also charged one of those men with aggravated assault.

The Irish national was released on bail this morning and is due to face court in September.

John Elferink says Darwin has a problem with antisocial behaviour, but it is by no means specific to the Irish community.
